Disturbingly nuanced performances from Patricia Arquette and Joey King make The Act a convincing case for the ongoing dramatization of true crime stories. Series premiere.

The Act Ep. 1: Gypsy eats a cupcake in a Party

Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy arrive in a new neighborhood, where Gypsy feels lonely due to a barrage of medical issues and an eagerness to make friends. But their new neighbors can be nosy, and Dee Dee and Gypsy have secrets to hide. But before the big event, Gypsy has a dental emergency that gets the attention of a skeptical doctor who could expose Dee Dee's secrets. Dee Dee makes Gypsy play dress up for a costume convention, where they each attract charming men who could dangerously complicate their insular relationship. And Gypsy is starting to question the lies her mother tells her—especially about how old she really is.

Gypsy is getting older and Dee Dee is forced to new legal maneuvers to keep control of her "little girl," but Dee Dee is limited by her health problems. Meanwhile, Gypsy goes to greater lengths than ever to connect with men and experience a sexual awakening. Gypsy and Nick scheme to meet in person and hope to win Dee Dee's approval, but when their plan goes disastrously wrong, they're pushed to make an extreme choice in order to be together. Gypsy and Nick are on the run, but flashbacks to a much younger Dee Dee reveal how trauma with her own mother set her up for conflict with Gypsy.

Gypsy is excited to start over with Nick in Wisconsin, but their new life doesn't match the happily-ever-after she imagined, and her anxiety worsens as past transgressions begin to catch up with them. In the Season 1 finale, Gypsy fights for her life by defending her actions, while Mel and Lacey realize that behind closed doors things were not always as they seemed. This is body horror by way of Walt Disney, a ghoulish fantasia of princess gowns, stuffed animals, prescription drugs, and physical harm.

The combination of subject and sequencing creates an eerie atmosphere, but pushing a bit further stylistically could have made this a campy treat instead of something caught between sincere storytelling and the bizarre true story. A reminder that even when you think you know a great deal about true story, there can be value in retelling it. Unsettling take on the fantastic story that ended in tragedy. The Act is a fine piece of true crime that won't be forgotten any time soon. I have no doubt that when you reach the end of this season, you may not be able to stomach much more, but I hope Hulu keeps the stories coming.

The Act may be too much for some viewers to handle, but it's a masterwork in true crime storytelling and one of the most exciting new additions to Hulu's library. Perhaps more than a study of true crime, The Act is a show about the fierce attachment between mothers and daughters, gone horribly wrong.

While using a Christian dating site, she eventually met a man named Nicholas Godejohn. He was from Big Bend, Wisconsin and had been diagnosed with autism. Gypsy and Godejohn went on to have a secret online relationship for two and a half years.

This was the year Gypsy first confided in her neighbor, Aleah Woodmansee, about her relationship with Godejohn. According to BuzzFeed , Gypsy told Woodmansee that she and Godejohn were planning a future together, had discussed eloping, and had sexual exchanges online that included elements of BDSM. Alarmed—in part because she still believed Gypsy to be a minor—Woodmansee reportedly tried to talk her out of continuing contact with Godejohn, but assumed that the actual plans were just a fantasy.

The meeting did not go as planned—Dee Dee hated Godejohn—but Gypsy was still able to sneak away and lose her virginity to Godejohn in a bathroom stall, according to her testimony at his trial. Yelling, throwing things, calling me names: bitch, slut, whore. It was after this day, according to Gypsy, that she decided Dee Dee had to die. She then went to hide in the bathroom with her hands over her ears while Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee to death. It's like my body wouldn't move. Then everything just went quiet.

After the murder, according to People , Gypsy and Godejohn stayed overnight at his motel in Springfield, before catching a bus to his home in Big Bend, Wisconsin on June Soon, it emerged that Gypsy had never been sick, and Dee Dee had engineered the years-long ruse that had fooled their entire community.

Gypsy pleaded guilty to murdering Dee Dee, and was sentenced to ten years in prison for second-degree murder. At the sentencing, prosecutor Dan Patterson noted the "extraordinary and unusual" circumstances of the case. Nicholas Godejohn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, and a concurrent year sentence on the charge of armed criminal action.
