Feb 26, Karen Mc rated it it was amazing Shelves: friends-to-lovers , enemies-to-lovers , dark , 5-top-reads , suspense. If two people are meant to be together, they will always find their way back. Have you began and ended a story in tears? The first, last, and so much of the middle of the book render you a wreck, where the tissues are a lifeline, controlling those feels that flow like a river. Throne of Truth by P If two people are meant to be together, they will always find their way back.

Throne of Truth by Pepper Winters hit my heart hard and sank itself into my soul. I dove into Throne of Truth , barely surfacing for air. This book was the drug and I was the addict. I shut out the world while Throne of Truth became my world. Dark bled with light. Wrong bled with right. This story swiftly was my air…my ache…my anguish…my addiction…my ALL. She thought she found love but realized it was a lie. Who she though was a friend is now a foe.

Now Elle must simply survive. She gave me life, and she took my life. Penn Everet is tall, dark, muscular, and handsome. Hero and villain. Angel and monster. Saint and sinner. Penn is a man of many layers and lies, but underneath the layers is a heart is gold, and oh did he hold onto my heart. The truth shall set you free. Elle wants the truth and Penn is sick of the lies. Penn must reveal himself, as he has been a man of mystery, to Elle or she will flee forever.

I was no longer a girl masquerading as a woman. I was all woman. She must protect those she loves along with herself. Like a butterfly, Elle has sprouted wings and is soaring high. Her passion and affection electrocuted my heart. She gave me the power to keep fighting. The fusion of hot and cold perfectly blend into magic that melts like molten lava. We kissed until we were breathless. This is not just lust but so much more! I felt their passion through the pages.

I fell for you the second I met you. This is a new side of Penn, one where is heart is no longer frozen but free. Crown of Lies was the dinner, but Throne of Truth is the dessert. Elle went from meek princess to fierce queen, a queen who still wants Penn…her king. This is a tooth and nails fight for love! To protect Elle, he must set her free. My heart cracked open, dying, gasping. This story stole my soul like a thief in the night, and all I could was submit to its power…. This story struck my emotions like a match, setting them on fire where every feel was a burn.

Throne of Truth took my tears, tears permanently etched in my eyes while reading. Throne of Truth nearly brought me to my knees where I WEPT from words that penetrated me with passion and power…heartbreak and hope. Throne of Truth is deliciously dark, passionately poignant, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Throne of Truth is easily one of my top February reads and best books too! This book held my heart in its hands, where my heart bled and beat with every word. My soul is sliced open and my heart is racing where I still feel Throne of Truth thrashing through me. My body, heart, and soul are still on fire It was messy and scribbly and up to us to draw it how we wanted. View 2 comments. Her tears glistened in memory. And now, I was here, and she was there, and there was no way to fix what was broken. Talk about your gripping conclusions.

I did NOT see this book coming at all. Full of twists and revelations that will leave your head reeling, Throne of Truth was the much anticipated conclusion that definitely lived up to the promise of the first book! This duet was Pepper Winters at her finest and ex 4. This duet was Pepper Winters at her finest and exactly why she's an auto-buy for me when it comes to dark romance. The woman can write one twisty and emotional tale that's as gritty as it is sexy. To me, she was untouchable, something I could never have. Starting immediately where Crown of Lies left off, we're thrown right back to the world of Elle and Penn and the fall out from all the truths that Penn has been holding back.

I don't want to give you much of the story because it will ruin the first book for you. I'd highly recommend not reading many reviews for this book if you haven't read the first. Trust me when I tell you that you'll want the full effect of the twist and turns of this romance.

Throne of Truth gives us the full story of Penn. Who he is, what he's been hiding, and why. I must have flew through the pages with lightning speed, absolutely riveted, and dying to know all his secrets. And boy does the man have some secrets. Elle's eyes are wide open here, and she finally sees the man that's both broken her and freed her for who he really is How did I ever believe I could walk away from him? How did one truth delete so many lies and make everything seem inconsequential now he was back in my life?

These two were sizzling together. Pepper truly gives that slow burn of romance here, which is funny considering that these two were hot and heavy already. But, man, I loved that she pulled it off so flawlessly. Let go and let me see you. Cry for me. Scream for me. I'd have loved to see the chain of events rather then reading the wrap up. But that aside, I enjoyed it thoroughly. Pepper certainly doesn't disappoint with this emotionally charged conclusion. I devoured it in one day.

I couldn't bring myself to put it down for even a second. And my sleep deprived self can't find it in me to be even a little sorry. His fingers wrapped around my throat as he angled my head, taking me past the realms of sanity and into chaos with his kiss. Penn and Elle are caught in a web of lies, and the only question on everyone's mind is will they survive the truth when everything is finally revealed? Elle's life is in danger, and despite her best effort to remain unstained from the deception of her foes, she is continuously brought right back into the c "Would she still trust me Elle's life is in danger, and despite her best effort to remain unstained from the deception of her foes, she is continuously brought right back into the chaos.

With her trust in Penn and her desire to be with him swinging like a pendulum, she is continuously battling her emotions versus what she believes are the facts. Elle continues to act out of fear and will stop at nothing to find out the truth about Penn. Supportive but possessive. Intelligent but quick tempered. He was an angel and monster in one. Now that she is deeply embedded in his heart, he can't seem to stay away. With time quickly slipping away, does he have what it takes to convince Elle that he is worthy of her love and affection or has too much damage already been done?

With a blend of passion, romance, and action this mysterious romance will certainly keep you engaged with each twist of the plot! I found Penn to be a complex character whose history and life experiences made him a unique hero with multiple layers of intensity. Elle experiences a rather large transformation throughout the development of the series, and although she wasn't my favorite heroine, I certainly felt that she and Penn made a perfect match. The secondary characters enhanced the plot, and I was especially fond of Larry. This duet is tender, sweet, passionate, mysterious, and with a dash of action and angst, it is sure to please contemporary romance fans.

Overall, I highly recommend Throne of Truth. The Truth and Lies Duet was certainly an intriguing read and Penn is certainly one hero you will want to meet! View all 27 comments. I was excited to read the conclusion to this story because Crown of Lies left me wanting for more! Pepper Winters didn't disappoint me, I got what I wanted and even more! I fell in love with Penn and Elle from the beginning, their story is unique and addictive and definitely one ill never forget!! If you are looking for an incredible mix of suspense, mystery, angst, plot twists and a heavy romance this series is perfect!!

View all 6 comments. Apr 15, Melanie rated it it was ok Shelves: contemporary , dark , erotic-scenes , new-adult , paloma , romance , buddy-reads , read-in This conclusion fell so flat for me. Throne of Truth was nothing close to what Crown of Lies was. The basic premise of this story is that our main protagonist, Elle, has never really had a childhood or really a life outside of work and responsibilities.

Yet, she cannot stop thinking about the nameless boy that saved her after sh 1. Yet, she cannot stop thinking about the nameless boy that saved her after she decided to be reckless and escape her structured and safe life on her nineteenth birthday, three years ago.

Elle is an amazing character. She is strong, smart, hard working, empathetic, and just an all around good human being. I loved her dynamic with her father, I loved watching her balance her life with her work, and I loved how much she selflessly did for others. I claim me. It has nothing to do with his past, or that he was homeless, or that he was in jail; it has to do with the fact that he's an asshole.

He treats her so bad, over a vendetta that doesn't even make sense. I mean, he would never give her his name and that's on him. How the hell did he expect her to save him? And how did he decide that she was a rich spoiled girl, all because he got one glimpse through a window? He is so hot and cold, and puts her through a rollercoaster of emotions that aren't fair. Seriously, she could do better. I do think there is a good discussion on this about the prison systems in America, and how unfairly we prosecute some with very little evidence. Also, how those with money and connections will always triumph, or at least get a better deal, than those with nothing.

It actually felt pretty bad that this book proved that, too, but I still think it is important for more people to see the unfair treatment that happens with our judicial system in their reading, because it truly is a problem we have in America. The thing that I disliked the most about this entire book was that Penn was cool with, and even went as far as giving a job to, Gio, a man that was going to rape Elle.

Like, I don't care if he has a bad influence for a friend, I don't care that he didn't have anyone growing up, I don't care what events lead him to that alley where he was about to rape someone; he's fucking disgusting and shouldn't be a part of their lives. Rapist and attempted rapist will never get sympathy from me regardless of their victims, but that goes even extra if they tried to rape my significant other, and I'm sure most people would feel this way.

And can we talk about how Greg was the worst kidnapper ever? Like, his plan didn't make sense and he made it so easy for everyone to find them. Like, I was actually scared over the attempted rape scene from Crown of Lies , but this one was just ridiculous. From the cabin, to the extremely long chain, to the dinner scene, and to every single one of this thoughts and actions.

Greg was legitimately one of the worst villains I've ever read about. And on a lighter note, never have I ever, before this book that is, read an erotic conjugal prison visit before. Also, I never thought I would ever write those words on my blog or Goodreads.

This is my life. Overall, I'm happy I read this duology; I just wish this final installment was better. I loved Crown of Lies , but I hated how the two main protagonists weren't together for most of this story, I hated Penn's unnecessary angst break ups, and I hated the sympathy for the attempted rapist. Like, ew. View all 4 comments. Despite not being super hype for this book after I read book 1 in this duet Seriously, this story didn't need more t Well, I literally just finished this book so you're gonna get my raw, fresh, true feelings On top of this ridiculous story extention, the two MCs spent the vast majority of this book I cannot believe the amount of inner dialogue going on in this book. I thought the 50 Shades trilogy was littered with too much inner yadda yadda It mostly went something like this Conversation stunting at it's finest! And, let's just slop some icing on that cake why don't we. He has no clue about this visit, he's not agreed to it or been made aware of it He's merely told to get his toothbrush and pajamas and is led away from his cell one night by a guard.

He's taken to a private room with a king sized bed, sexy black linens on the bed, a plush red shag rug on the floor, a private bathroom, etc. And, what's this, there's a welcome basket complete with lube and condoms? He's got 12 hours to ring her bell and then at 7am, the guards will bring the two lovebirds breakfast in bed What the fuck is this? For reals What is this ridiculousness?! Here's a rundown of my reading this book Going In Shortly after beginning this book My overall feelings on this book View all 31 comments.

Throne of Truth proves that theory wrong. Elle and Penn are put through the ringer in this final installment of the Lies Duet.

Throne of Truth

They experience so many ups and downs and trials and tribulations, but become stronger after it all. They multiply divide, and conquer — not just the listener but the liar, too. They infiltrate the truth. They twist words until false is truer than reality. How the various swirling lies affect all the characters. Truth versus Lie. Light versus Dark. In the end, will truth win out? Once again, Pepper's writing moved me. However, my true joy was reading the words.

I was sharp breaths, swirling thoughts, and lost bearings. Character growth is a key component in a novel and this one excelled. Penn and Elle, both finally tell their truths and deal with the fallout head on. Elle, in particular, really grows during this novel. She takes risks and chances she may not have braved before Penn. But how do you catch a killer no one has seen?

And when so much of the evidence they leave behind has gone up in smoke? Galway Young Garda Cormac Reilly is called to a scene he will never forget. Two silent, neglected children - year-old Maude and five-year-old Jack - are waiting for him at a crumbling country house. Upstairs, their mother lies dead. Twenty years later, a body surfaces in the icy black waters of the River Corrib. At first it looks like an open-and-shut case, but then doubt is cast on the investigation's findings - and the integrity of the police.

Cormac is thrown back into the cold case that has haunted him his entire career - what links the two deaths, two decades apart? When two year-old girls go missing in Thailand, their families are thrust into the international spotlight: desperate, bereft and frantic with worry. What were the girls up to before they disappeared? Journalist Kate Waters always does everything she can to be first to the story, first with the exclusive, first to discover the truth - and this time is no exception.

But she can't help but think of her own son, whom she hasn't seen in two years, since he left home to go travelling. Former CIA case officer Charles Jenkins is a man at a crossroads: in his early sixties, he has a family, a new baby on the way, and a security consulting business on the brink of bankruptcy. Then his former bureau chief shows up at his house with a risky new assignment: travel undercover to Moscow and locate a Russian agent believed to be killing members of a clandestine US spy cell known as the seven sisters. Desperate for money, Jenkins agrees to the mission and heads to the Russian capital.

DI Amy Winter is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her highly respected police officer father. But when a letter arrives from the prison cell of Lillian Grimes, one half of a notorious husband-and-wife serial-killer team, it contains a revelation that will tear her life apart. Responsible for a string of heinous killings decades ago, Lillian is pure evil. A psychopathic murderer. Now, she is ready to reveal the location of three of her victims - but only if Amy plays along with her twisted game.

Haunted by blurred memories of a sister who sacrificed herself to save her, Amy faces a race against time to uncover the missing bodies. But what if, from behind bars, Grimes has been pulling the strings even tighter than Amy thought? And can she overcome her demons to prevent another murder? I have listened and enjoyed many books, at least 2 a week over the last few months, some I have enjoyed and given 5 stars and some.. This book, Truth and Lies out weighs ALl the rest, I dont think any others will ever come close, but hey I will keep looking..

Definitely not just another plodding police procedural. The narration was exceptionally good, subtly dramatic and expressive but never OTT. A gripping story only slightly let down by being a tad too long with an overly sentimental ending. Could not put it down once I had started. Brilliant performance by Elizabeth Knowelden!!! Definitely worth listening to. Couldn't put it down, great narration for a truly good suspenseful work of fiction. Suspenseful new police procedural series led by an intelligent DI who has quite an intriguing past.

While DI Amy Winter is morning the death of her beloved father, she is stunned when she receives a letter call from Lillian Grimes, a woman serving life in prison for the murdering the teenage girls that she and her husband kidnapped, raped, and murdered. Lillian makes Amy an offer she can't refuse: She will reveal to Amy where the girls are buried if Amy complies with all of her requests.

She also provides Amy with some interesting information about her childhood. Amy now must now battle childhood demons, a manipulative psychopath, and as well as an elusive kidnapper. There are multiple storylines and several different narrators including, Amy, Poppy, Paddy, Hemmy, and Lilian.

Amy has the largest role. Her colleague Paddy also has a major storyline. The ending wraps up a little too neatly or so it seems until we get to the final page. There are some very sick and twisted scenes that involve rape, physical violence, and domestic abuse. This is a well-plotted, character-driven first installment in the DI Amy Winter series.

The reader gets to know her very well, but I wanted to know more about the years between her childhood and the present moment. Paddy was also quite likable. I really don't have time for another series, but I couldn't resist reading this after seeing so many glowing reviews from my Goodreads friends. I recommend to those who enjoy police procedurals.

Elizabeth Knowelden was amazing with the delivery of the stoey. Great Book! No spoilers. Excellent narrator. She should win an award someday. Great story BUT!!!! If you are going to have what all listeners are finally hoping for, an intelligent female driven main character with guts! It is something women writers do with their female characters. The main character has the right thoughts and actions and at the height of things, here it comes..

Wait for it The character starts having dumb second thoughts men would never have. Makes me crazy. It is worth listening to. Just be prepared for the inevitable. This book was so great! Up until the last 15 minutes. No spoilers, but the twist at the end was so unnecessary, not to mention unbelievable. But apart from that it was a great read. Lots of plot twists, but still easy to follow in narrated form.

I noticed that the author has written a series of books based on DI Amy Winter, the main character in this book. What a dark and gripping mystery. I was so worried about what that horrible mother would do. She shows strength and the ability to go the extra mile to find the answers.

In this story she is led along by her mother, birth mother, Lillian Grimes, found guilty of murder. Lillian is manipulating Amy by promising to tell her where the last three bodies are buried if Amy will visit her in prison. Along with the cold case of the Grimes killings, there is a real and very recent kidnapping of a young teenager in a very reminiscent fashion. As Amy regains memories of what happened when she was 4 years old, she comes to know the truth and is able at last to let go of some of the guilt she feels about her sister, Sallyanne.

This is a wonderful book. The author is terrific. The narrator, Elizabeth Knowledon, is wonderful. She does the voices in such a subdued and soft fashion that you are spellbound. It takes place in London and no guns are involved.

The Truth About Lies (The Truth Duet, #1) by Aly Martinez

What a book! I had no idea what to expect, yet it was nothing like what I was expecting, and it was everything I wanted it to be! She lives at the mercy of a brutal crime family, managing an apartment building full of working girls, offering safety, protection and somebody to care for them. She is the absolute definition of a survivor, and the more I read about her story and all that she has done to get through it all, the more I absolutely love her! Penn is a man whose world fell apart when he watched his wife being killed while he was over a thousand miles away. She smiled. And not like that ridiculous fake one she was wearing when she opened the door … This smile was different.

And I knew — because it was the exact moment I felt the first slice through mine. Cora wants Penn immediately. He is not only gorgeous, but he is mysterious and broody, and the kind of man that you need to know more about. He has demons, and they are dark, but to Penn, Cora is a light that he never expected, and though he tries to keep this distance, he is helpless to stop the feelings brewing between them.

Drop this bullshit with me. So, yeah. Brimming with want, need, and sizzling sexual tension, I reveled in every moment of these two finding and exploring each other. Until, helpless to stop it, they slowly begin to open up to each other, and the love story that follows is sweet and emotional with a wonderful sense of fun, and surprising to them both.

In my world, where pain, filth, and fear were a way of life, why waste the possibility of finally feeling something incredible? And when the truth brings nothing but pain, sometimes lies can be the only option. Nothing in the world had ever disappointed me, broken me, or destroyed me quite like hope. God, I was so sucked into this book! I had so many questions while reading, and my head was brimming with theories and possibilities.

The complexities of the storyline are revealed slowly throughout the book in a way that makes each disclosure a revelation that adds further depth to the story, while also keeping me desperate to know more. His hand slipped higher up my back until his whole palm was warming my skin — and scrambling my thoughts.

These characters and their stories will rip your heart out, but the darkly desolate world she creates for us is brightened by moments of fun and lightheartedness, and a beautifully developing romance that is easy and natural with a strong emotional connection at its centre. But this is only part 1 of the story and OMG, how am I supposed to go on after that cliffy? That ending is a heartstopper.

I need more, and I need it now, thank God book 2 is coming soon! An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. View 2 comments. I was expecting a majorly action packed book with a good dose of romance, but sadly I don't feel like that's what I got. The pacing seemed off to me, as it felt slow. I feel like not that much happened tbh, and that was disappointing.

I'm going to continue on to the next book in hopes that it picks up and makes up for my disappointment, because Aly Martinez is one of my favorite authors Cora is stuck under the control of her dead husband's criminal family and she is running their whore house for them while trying to find her way out. Penn's brother just got out of jail after serving a sentence in the same cell as Cora's father in law, and Penn and his brother land a job as the whore house's new maintenance men. Sparks fly instantly, which take both of them by surprise because they both are grieving their lost spouses.

There are some suspenseful moments, some sweet moments, and some sexy times Overall Pace of Story: Slow. This felt way too slow for me. I think there were a lot of things that were unnecessary in the long run, and it felt like not all that much happened in this book. Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings. H rating: 4 stars. I liked him. I really liked his protective instincts and how he came to care for Cora so strongly. I really liked her. Her circumstances were horrible, but I appreciated her strength and protective nature.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story. Possible Triggers: Yes! It was exciting, adventurous, steamy and sexy, and fun! In The Truth About Lies you get a love between Penn and Cora that is filled with hot-insatiable sexual need for one another, and so much danger and challenges that you feel the weight of it. I love how the author creates these characters and their love relationship that allows lightness in this dark and dangerous world where danger always seems to follow and with a vengean Another amazing addicting read I love how the author creates these characters and their love relationship that allows lightness in this dark and dangerous world where danger always seems to follow and with a vengeance.

The story is getting more intense and…I want more! Every character is well defined and written. I devoured every single page of it, because everything about it is amazing! The book leaves you with so many questions Just wow!!! This book was But still It was a powerful story and I'm dying to read the conclusion of Penn's and Cora story!!! And not only theirs!!! Well, honestly I don't know from where to start Cora's case was special! Cora's case was special!!! She was living in a very shitty world and abuse was an often phenomenon in her world, but she was staying intact and even though hope it was a dangerous thing, she was having plenty of it in her heart!!!

And then Penn Walker came into her life Challenging him to lie. Begging him to tell the truth. And hoping beyond all reason that he was the type of man I so desperately needed him to be. Now, after all those years, he is still suffering from unspeakable pain He had also abandoned everything behind him and he is seeking for something else with Drew, his brother, at his side And then his world is colliding with Cora's and even though that he is trying to keep his distance from her, it is just impossible!!!!

It fucking burns. I will not be responsible for that. Is there a way for Cora to get finally free from her fate??? Will Penn allow to the past to stay where it belong??? Is there a hope for those two??? This was a promise. A vow. An undeniable truth. And, worst of all, it gave me hope. And feeling that with Penn? Well, it scared the hell out of me. And, fucking worse, I wanted to. At least not for her. Together and separately In the beginning, i was comfused by Cora's role in there, but then i understood and i loved her mama bear mode for everyone Her heart was pure and good, even though chaos and darkness were all around her and her loved ones!!!

As for Penn??? He was moody and brutal, but he was good deep to his core Even though he was seeking something specific, he couldn't leave behind those who really mattered I take care of people, Penn. I'd told her if she got too close it'd burn her too. And now, we were all up in flames.

Because it wasn't only Cora and Penn's truth that I'm after River, Savannah, Drew, Catalina are also soft spots for me and i can't wait for the heroes to finally put the lies behind them and for the truth to shine Especially the truths that are hidding in their hearts!!!!
