The politics of liberal guilt pervades campus thinking. My great fear with such plans is that talented students end up being patronised. The young people we work with at Generating Genius are mainly the first in their family to go to university. Some come from homes where there is not even a dining table. And yet they love the formality and ritual of elite universities. The reason they want to go to places such as Cambridge is to gain a broader experience of life, discover new knowledge and meet different people.

Yes, it would be great to see members of staff that looked like them — but what they signed up for was the punting, the robes, and the formal dinners; for the Greek heroes and the quaint chapels. They are not interested in pale attempts at reinforcing the familiar. It would be a mistake to think this guilt culture starts and ends with universities, however.

It has a tight grip on our schools, where black Caribbean children are still three times more likely to be excluded than their white counterparts. These children are faced with liberal teachers who, in a misguided attempt to connect, try to negotiate with them and be their friends, when in fact they long for discipline and high expectations.

Too many of our Caribbean boys come from chaotic family backgrounds and they need a school context that is highly ritualised, where there is rigour and discipline. Take this away and they become fodder for exclusions.
