Do you know Him better than other people in your life? He wants to be known by you and have intimate fellowship with you. Are you in need of renewal?

The book of Revelation includes letters to seven churches, of which Laodicea was the wealthiest and one that did not receive encouragement. Just like the church in Laodicea, western culture today needs renewal. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

This is the wide road of the lukewarm; the road of an indifferent heart that leads to idleness. It is a wide road of self-satisfaction that leads to a hardened heart.

Jesus says that if you are lukewarm and casual He will spit you out of His mouth. He is saying because if you are not on fire and passionate about Him, discipline will come in order to bring us back to Him. The Church in Laodicea was laid back about God. They started to live with a false sense of security.

Do you live your life needing God? Are you on fire or are you lukewarm? Wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked does not describe someone that knows they are a child of God. If you have a relationship with Jesus, you will have joy and life, even in bad circumstances. Matthew 13 tells the Parable of the Hidden Treasure.

The Kingdom of Heaven is more valuable than anything else we can have, and a person must be willing to give up everything to obtain it. Nothing is more precious than the Kingdom of Heaven. Notice in his joy he went. In Ireland, as elsewhere, the honesty and integrity with which the Church chooses to confront this painful chapter of her history can offer an example and a warning to society as a whole. The World Meeting of Families has given us great hope and encouragement that families are growing more and more conscious of their own irreplaceable role in passing on the faith.

At the same time, Catholic schools and programmes of religious instruction continue to play an indispensable role in creating a culture of faith and a sense of missionary discipleship. I know that this is a source of pastoral concern for all of you.

Genuine religious formation calls for faithful and joyful teachers who are able to shape not only minds but also hearts in the love of Christ and in the practice of prayer. The upheavals of recent years have tested the traditionally strong faith of the Irish people. Yet they have also offered the opportunity for an interior renewal of the Church in this country and pointed to new ways of envisioning its life and mission.

With humility and trust in his grace, may you discern and set out on new paths for these new times.

1. Remember that you are a created being, created by an ever-present Creator.

Surely, the strong missionary sense rooted in the soul of your people will inspire creative ways of bearing witness to the truth of the Gospel and building up the community of believers in the love of Christ and zeal for the growth of his kingdom. As Saint John of the Cross teaches us, it is in the dark night that the light of faith shines purest in our hearts.

Finally, in the spirit of ecclesial communion, I ask you to continue to foster unity and fraternity among yourselves and, together with the leaders of other Christian communities, to work and pray fervently for reconciliation and peace among all the members of the Irish family.
