Segantini's choice of subject in WAG is discussed in relation to the artist's childhood experiences by Abraham in a psycho-analytical study first published in Quinsac suggests that the pairs of floating figures represent the same two women at different stages of their redemptive suffering, but she notes that in the absence of any explicit statement by the artist, interpretation can only be speculative.
WAG has been known by several titles. It was exhibited at Berlin in as Nirwana.
