Return to Book Page. As has been said before, Mary Ann Shaughnessy is no ordinary child. She first won a place in the hearts of thousands of readers in A Grand Man, described by Alan Melville in a broadcast as 'a quite enchanting novel, written by someone who obviously knows the mind of a child as well as she knows the mean back streets of Tyneside. Away from the temptations of the town, doing the kind of work he was meant for, he must slowly but surely turn into the angelic being Mary Ann knew him to be.
But Mary Ann did not count on the frailties of human nature nor the sheer contrariness of others, which destroyed all her well-laid plans. In this second novel of the Shaughnessy saga, Mary Ann returns in this delightful, warm-hearted and humorously observed story of life set in northern England. Get A Copy. Hardcover , pages. I am making a list of all the books I have loved and enjoyed and was surprised by how many Catherine Cookson stories I have read.
Then again she was a brilliant writer and I had such pleasure in every book I read. The dusting could always wait if I had a Catherine Cookson book in my hand. Loved the books and I loved the films that where created from these stories. Thank you Catherine Cookson for all the happy hours I spent reading your books. Mary Ann is up to her usual mischief in the second novel of the Mary Ann series. She is still eight years old, but this novel has a bit less of the "childlike" feel to it than did the first one. In this one, Mary Ann and her ma and da and brother Michael are living on a farm.
Her father has quit drinking Wow is all I can say…. Your sure write from your heart. The Hunted and Whisper of Death my fight with Faith are my favourite. Africa has a soul that you feel when reading the Hunted. Whisper of Death … Beautiful from your heart and love your honesty in that. Thank you so much my dear friend — your support and confidence in me has made a huge difference! Thank you Ruvey — they do say you can take the African out of Africa but never Africa out of the African — so true.
I am so looking forward to your novels coming out,as a South African living in Johannesburg, when I read your extracts from the Hunted and Kill me please Sir, I feel those words.
"From We to Me" Provides Comfort For Grieving the Loss of A Spouse or Loved One
To date 9 September , Rhino have been slaughtered this year! The poaching of rhino and elephant in Africa right now is appaling, books like this will hightlight this plight. Sixpence, I see a Sixpence on every other corner in Johannesburg, glue their only comfort, my heart goes out to the Sixpences of the world.
Well done Maryanne, love your work! Gosh Kim, you feed-back is invaluable as you are living this each day! We definitely need the world to be aware of the loss of such amazing animals and the plight of the street children — it is so sad! I really enjoyed listening to the extracts from the Hunted beautifully read by Carmen. I think you are a very talented Writer Mary-Anne.
I will ask my friends to visit your website xxx. I really appreciate you trying it out on them as interesting to see the response of a teenager and a 10 year old — thank you. Well done Mary-Anne you write with such passion and really draw the reader into the story. Your stories about Africa are brilliant and one gets the feeling of being right there where it is all happening. I loved your stories about your own experiences as well and can see that your life is a journey with the Lord and that you really walk in faith.
Lots of luv sheila xxx. Mary-Anne, you write from the heart, and it is a joy to read. I feel for Southern Africans who have left our wonderful continent as I could never do so — Africa has her own heartbeat which truly resonates with my soul, however you capture the essence and bring awareness to those who are not sufficiently blessed to experience Africa. Well done. Once an African, always an African. We might not always understand why God allows certain trials and tests into our lives, except for us to grow spiritually, and become an inspiration to others, which you have clearly become.
Keep writing with passion and heart! I hope she is okay now.
Hi Liz, yes she is okay now; still has a certain amount of fear but is a survivor as are all Africans! So look forward to reading your books. I think I will pass out when I see the book on the shelves!
What a day that will be, I will get drunk. Well done Mary-Anne the website is brilliant and the story excerpts encourage you to want to read more.

Hi Bheka. I created the Zanzi tribe to encompass all the various tribes in Africa as a whole. I have also not chosen a particular part of Southern Africa but described scenes from various parts of our beautiful continent! A friend of mine viewed your website and told me about it. Enjoy your writing and am looking forward to more about Nao, Fern etc. Even though we have the outback its still extreme in difference to what you describe about africa.
Love the website. Also look forward to reading your books. Thanks so much Deryl! Your support means the world to me! I love your website, well done! You remind me of a bulldog, bite down and hold on until something happens. Keep up the good work. I love the blogs from Fern as well as the videos. God bless Mary-anne x. Thank you so much Tanya. The bulldog comment, as long as it only reminds you of its bite and not its face!
Lots of love xxxx. Mary-Anne, I bet your Dad was a wonderful man…………….. I miss my Mom and Dad so much too. I look forward to a year of a wonderful friendship with you and all my other friends.
Love you. Hi Patti. The Mary Ann series is on of my favourites by Cookson. This book continues Mary Ann's saga with Mr. Lord, to whom Mary Ann refers to as The Lord. Her mischievous personality continues to shine through in a most delightful way. This is my second reading of this book, and I found it as charming as when I first read it decades ago.
Cannot wait to re read the next in the series! Once I discovered the Mary Ann series of 8 books, i was hooked. So great to pick up each book and know the characters, and read further happenings as Mary Ann grows up. A lot of the situations are so easy to relate to, believe, and you almost feel like you are there. I wish there were more books in this series.

I started reading the series, beginning early November and finishing the last book on 20 December. I have never been dissatisfied with any book that she has written. Her books make me smile, cry, laugh. Catherine Cookson is an expert at character development. I couldn't wait to find out what Mary Ann was up to next!
